Korean Saju · 사주

518,400charts exist. One of them has been yours since the minute you were born.

Four numbers — the year, month, day and hour — resolve into eight characters. Korea has read them for six centuries. Most of the people they describe never see them.

사주 in practice

Read before weddings, launches and moves.

Saju has sat inside Korean decision-making for six hundred years — consulted before a wedding date is set, before a company opens, before a family moves. It is arithmetic performed on a calendar, which means the arithmetic can be checked.

Calculated to true solar time

Seoul's clocks run about 32 minutes ahead of Seoul's sun. Every chart here is corrected for the longitude of your birthplace and for the equation of time. Most calculators skip both.

Korea's actual timezone history

The meridian moved four times and daylight saving ran in twelve separate stretches. A chart for a 1955 or 1988 summer birth is wrong by an hour anywhere that assumes today's UTC+9.

Your reading never changes

Charts are computed once and stored. Come back in ten years and it will say exactly what it says today.

What your chart holds

All of this comes out of four numbers.

Eight characters, in four pillars

Year, month, day and hour, each with a stem standing above a branch. The stem above your day pillar is you — the one character in the chart that is not circumstance.

Five elements, unevenly spread

Nobody is dealt all five in equal measure. The one you are short of is usually the one you spend your life reaching for.

  • Woodgrowth, push, the impulse to begin
  • Firevisibility, warmth, the impulse to be seen
  • Earthstability, holding, the impulse to keep
  • Metalrefinement, cutting, the impulse to decide
  • Waterdepth, adaptation, the impulse to know

A decade you are standing inside

The eight characters never change. What changes is the decade you read them through — the luck pillars, 대운, which turn over every ten years and rearrange what the same chart does. They tell you which years the door is open, and which years it is not.

How it works

Three steps, and none of them are yours to do.

01

Give it four numbers

Year, month, day, hour — plus where you were born, so the sun can be put in the right place.

02

The engine does the calendar

Solar terms, true solar time, and Korea's real timezone history. Same input, same chart, every time.

03

You read what it says

Your day master, your element balance, and the decade you are in. Free, and yours to keep.

A real chart

This is what yours will look like.

Not a mock-up — computed by the same engine, from one real birth moment: 19 April 1996, 07:20, Seoul. Yours needs exactly the same four numbers.

The ten day masters

Ten day masters. One of them is you.

The stem above your day pillar is the character the whole chart is read from. There are ten of them, and you have not seen yours yet.

Four numbers. That's all it takes.
