Yang Metal

Yang Metal is unrefined metal: ore, axe, blade, weapon. It is the most decisive of the ten day masters and the most capable of doing what needs doing while everyone else is still discussing it.

You have an instinct for the necessary hard call — the firing, the ending, the truth said plainly — and you make it faster than is comfortable for people around you. This makes you invaluable in a crisis and difficult in a calm week.

What Yang Metal charts consistently underestimate is the aftermath. You cut cleanly and then you feel it, later, alone, and you do not usually tell anyone that the decisiveness cost you anything.

You are direct, protective and startlingly loyal once committed. You are also blunt in ways that land harder than you intend, and you tend to resolve emotional conflict by solving it rather than sitting in it. You need someone who does not flinch and who can tell you, without heat, when you have cut something you should have left standing.

Anywhere hard decisions are the job: turnarounds, law, surgery, military, finance, crisis management, editing. You are excellent under pressure and restless without it. You will create conflict in a peaceful organisation out of sheer under-use.

Fire melts Metal. Fire against Yang Metal is pressure and scrutiny — but unusually, some Fire is what makes you useful, because unrefined metal needs heat to become a tool. Too little and you are blunt force; too much and you lose your edge entirely. Excess Water also drains you: Metal produces Water, and endless demand for your output dulls you.

Enough Fire to be shaped by, and Earth to be grounded in. Yang Metal with no Earth is a weapon with no handle.

This is general to Yang Metal. What your chart actually needs depends on whether your day master is strong or weak, which depends on the other seven characters — and on which ten-year cycle you are standing in now.

Yang Metal charts are heavily represented among people who are called in when something has gone badly wrong. But a day master is one character out of eight.
