What this is, and what we claim.

Saju is computed from true solar time, not from the clock on the wall. Two corrections stand between the two, and we apply both.

The first is the standard-meridian offset. Korea runs on UTC+9, centred on 135°E, but Seoul sits at about 127°E — so Seoul's sun reaches noon roughly 32 minutes after Seoul's clocks say it has. The second is the equation of time: the earth's orbit is elliptical and its axis tilted, so apparent solar time drifts up to about 16 minutes ahead of or behind mean time depending on the date.

We also use the timezone rule that was actually in force on your birth date. Korea changed its standard meridian four times and observed daylight saving in twelve separate periods, most recently around the 1988 Olympics. A chart for a 1955 or a 1988 summer birth is wrong by up to an hour anywhere that assumes today's UTC+9.

Year and month pillars are decided by solar terms — the sun's actual position at an absolute moment. Day and hour pillars are read from local apparent solar time. Collapsing those two clocks into one is the usual source of charts that are subtly wrong for anyone born far from their timezone's meridian.

Every chart shows this working in its Receipts panel. You do not have to take any of it on trust.

Saju describes conditions, not outcomes. It can say that a decade applies pressure to your working life. It cannot say you will be promoted in March, and anything that does is generating a prediction rather than deriving one.

There is no controlled research showing that Saju predicts anything. It is a six-century-old interpretive tradition and we present it as one.

The tradition also disagrees with itself in places that matter. Whether a day master reads strong or weak — the single most consequential judgement in a reading — is genuinely contested between schools, as is the handling of the 23:00 hour and the weighting of hidden stems. We make a call, we tell you it is a call, and we would rather you held it loosely.
