Yin Metal

Yin Metal is refined metal: jewellery, the blade already finished, the polished thing. Where Yang Metal is the axe, Yin Metal is the scalpel — and the difference is not force but precision.

You have taste, and you have it about everything. Yin Metal is the day master most associated with discernment: you notice quality, you notice its absence, and you are unable to pretend otherwise convincingly. This makes you excellent company and occasionally unbearable.

The vulnerability is that a jewel's value depends on being appraised. Yin Metal people care more than they admit about being recognised by the right people — not by everyone, which is Yang Fire's need, but by the few whose judgement they respect. Unrecognised Yin Metal turns sharp.

You are selective to a degree that looks like coldness and is actually standards. You do not want to be wanted broadly; you want to be chosen specifically, by someone whose taste you rate. You are capable of great tenderness with very few people, and cutting precision with everyone who disappoints you.

Design, law, medicine, curation, criticism, luxury, any field where the difference between good and excellent is the whole job. You are wasted in volume work and you know it, which makes you difficult to manage in it.

Fire — but where Yang Metal needs some heat to be forged, you are already finished, and Fire mostly just damages you. Heavy Fire in a Yin Metal chart is exposure, criticism and pressure to perform coarsely. Excess Water dulls the shine: constant extraction with no restoration.

Earth to hold you and, crucially, Water in the right amount — Water washes Metal clean. In practice: rest, and one or two people whose opinion of you is settled.

This is general to Yin Metal. What your chart actually needs depends on whether your day master is strong or weak, which depends on the other seven characters — and on which ten-year cycle you are standing in now.

Yin Metal is common among people with an unerring eye and a slightly punishing standard for themselves. But a day master is one character out of eight.
