Strong and weak

Once you know your day master, the next question is whether the rest of the chart supports it or demands from it. This is the strong/weak judgement, and almost every practical conclusion depends on it.

How it is worked out

Count everything that feeds your day master, and everything that shares its element — that is support. Weigh it against everything that drains it, controls it, or is controlled by it — that is demand.

If support dominates, the day master is strong. If demand dominates, it is weak. Most charts sit somewhere in between, and reasonable readers disagree about the borderline ones constantly.

Neither is better

This gets misread as a grade. It is not.

A strong day master has force and needs somewhere to spend it. Without an outlet — real work, real challenge, real resistance — the pushing turns inward, and strong charts with nothing to push against are among the least happy people the system describes.

A weak day master has less force and needs support before it can carry what it is handed. That is not a defect. Weak charts that get the support they need perform perfectly well; weak charts under heavy pressure burn out early and usually blame themselves for it.

Why this changes the advice

Consider a chart with a lot of Metal pressing on a Wood day master. If the Wood is strong, that Metal is useful: it is structure, discipline, the thing that shapes raw force into a career. If the Wood is weak, the same Metal is just damage.

Identical characters. Opposite readings. This is why an element-count alone tells you very little, and why "you have too much Metal" is not a statement that means anything on its own.

The honest caveat

This is the most contested judgement in Saju. Different schools weight hidden stems differently, treat the month pillar with different authority, and draw the strong/weak line in different places.

If two readers give you different answers here, neither is necessarily incompetent. Be suspicious of anyone who presents it as settled.
