Clashes and combinations

Characters in a chart interact. Some collide, some bind, some quietly corrode. These relationships are secondary to the element and ten-god layers, but they explain a lot of the texture.

Clash

The twelve branches sit in a circle and each has a direct opposite. When both appear — in your chart, or when a year brings one against a branch you hold — that is a clash.

A clash forces movement. Moves, breakups, job changes, relocations. It is disruption rather than disaster, and a chart that is too settled sometimes needs one. People often report that clash years, in retrospect, were the years something finally shifted.

Combination

Certain pairs attract instead. When they meet they bind, sometimes generating a new element between them, sometimes simply neutralising each other.

Combination reads as harmony, and often is. But a bound character has also stopped doing its job — and if that character was the one your chart needed working, harmony is not what you got.

Harm

Quieter than a clash. Where a clash is structural and loud, harm is interpersonal and corrosive: small grievances, betrayals, relationships that erode rather than break.

It is rarely the headline of a reading. It is frequently the explanation for why something that looked fine kept not working.

Void

Because ten stems pair with twelve branches, two branches in every sixty-unit run are left without a stem partner. Those two are your void branches.

Whatever a void branch signifies tends to be hard to hold: money that arrives and leaves, recognition that does not land, relationships that never quite settle. Traditional readings also treat void as a contemplative marker rather than a purely negative one — the areas of life where you are least attached, for better and worse.

Proportion

These relationships are real but they are not the main event. A reading built primarily on clashes and voids, without a strong/weak judgement underneath it, is doing astrology-by-checklist.
