Astrology explained for a complete beginner
By Mindy Park
A plain-English introduction to Western astrology vocabulary: charts, planets, signs, houses and aspects, with clear limits on what those symbols establish.
Astrology interprets celestial patterns through a symbolic tradition. In a Western natal reading, the starting point is a birth chart: a diagram calculated for a birth time and place. Learning its vocabulary helps you understand an interpretation, but does not by itself establish that the interpretation is true.
If you came looking for Korean Saju, it uses a different chart structure. Our Saju and Western astrology comparison explains that distinction. The vocabulary below introduces a Western natal chart.
The main pieces of a chart
Wiley’s introductory astrology chapter describes planets, signs and houses as different parts of the symbolic framework: planets are associated with drives, signs with styles of expression, and houses with areas of life. Those are practitioners’ interpretive conventions, not demonstrated causal effects.
| Term | What to look for on the chart |
|---|---|
| Planetary placement | A named body and its plotted position |
| Zodiac sign | The sign label attached to a placement |
| House | A numbered division in the chart |
| Aspect | An angular relationship between chart positions |
| Ascendant or rising sign | The chart’s eastern-horizon reference |
The TimePassages manual shows placements, houses and aspect lines in its chart display. Different settings can change how some features are presented, so keep the calculator’s settings with your chart.
Read a label before accepting a description
A fictional report might begin with a placement, explain its traditional association and then describe someone as “reserved.” Those are three steps, not one fact. First check that the placement matches the supplied chart. Then ask how the writer reached the interpretation.
You can understand what a symbol means within a system while deciding that a personality description does not fit you. Keep an example and a counterexample rather than forcing every situation into the same label.
A Sun sign is one part of the vocabulary
Knowing a Sun sign is not the same as knowing every placement. It also does not resolve uncertain birth-time information. For the difference between a sign-based forecast and a natal chart, see horoscope versus natal chart.
There is no need to learn every abbreviation at once. Begin with the chart’s legend, then ask about one feature you can identify clearly.
Belief and evidence answer different questions
Pew’s October 2024 survey found that 27% of U.S. adults said they believed in astrology. Pew’s weighted survey included 9,593 adults. This measures belief, not predictive performance. The number of people who use a vocabulary does not validate every claim made with it.
