Saju versus Western astrology: what each chart uses
By Mindy Park
Compare the inputs, symbols and interpretation methods of Korean Saju and Western natal astrology without treating them as interchangeable.
Saju and Western natal astrology both begin with birth information, but they turn it into different symbolic charts. Korean Saju organizes the birth into calendar-based pillars. Western natal astrology maps celestial positions and, when time and location are available, features such as houses and the ascendant.
You cannot translate a Saju Day Master directly into a Sun sign or rising sign. Similar-sounding personality descriptions do not make those labels equivalent.
What is on each chart?
The Academy of Korean Studies describes Saju through stems and branches attached to the birth year, month, day and hour. The system interprets relationships among those symbols. The TimePassages manual describes a Western natal wheel with planets, zodiac signs, houses and aspects.
| Question | Korean Saju | Western natal astrology |
|---|---|---|
| What arrangement do I see? | Four pillars of stems and branches | Usually a wheel with planetary positions |
| Which personal label might I learn first? | Day Master | Sun sign, with other placements considered separately |
| What settings should I keep? | Calendar and time-handling conventions | Zodiac and house-system choices, plus time and location |
| Can a familiar label describe the whole chart? | A year animal or Day Master alone does not show the full arrangement | A Sun sign alone does not show the full wheel |
These are descriptions of the systems, not evidence that either predicts your life. Our introduction to Saju gives the Korean terms more room.
Similar inputs do not mean identical calculations
For either chart, record the date, birthplace and local birth time you actually know. Keep uncertainty visible. Do not convert a birth time into another zone simply because a tradition comes from another country; follow the chosen calculator’s input instructions.
A 2002 maternity-unit study found a maximum difference of 7 minutes 52 seconds between delivery-room and resuscitation-room clocks. The original abstract illustrates why recorded precision and actual certainty can differ. It is a historical observation from one unit, not a correction to apply to your time or a measure of modern record quality.
If an input is uncertain, ask which outputs might change. Saju’s calendar boundaries and a Western chart’s time-sensitive features are different reasons to preserve that uncertainty.
Why the descriptions can seem to disagree
Imagine a fictional Western interpretation emphasizes sociability while a Saju interpretation emphasizes independence. You do not have to choose a winner from those two words. Ask each reader what chart feature they mean and what ordinary behavior would illustrate it.
You might be sociable with friends and independent at work. That possible reconciliation is your reflection, not proof that either system discovered the traits. Keep a counterexample too, so the descriptions do not become impossible to question.
Choose by the question you want to explore
If you want your Moon, rising sign or natal houses, choose a Western chart service. For Korean stems, branches and your Day Master, explore a Saju chart. Saju Garden calculates the latter.
You can learn about both, but keep their labels, settings and claims separate. Understanding what is actually on the page is a better first step than combining every interpretation into a single verdict about yourself.
