What types of fortune telling can a beginner try?
By Mindy Park
A beginner’s guide to tarot, astrology, Saju and other readings, organized by what you bring and what happens during the session.
Beginners can explore card readings, birth-based systems and traditions that interpret physical features or other signs. Familiar examples include tarot, Western astrology, Korean Saju, palm reading and numerology. They differ in what information they use and what a session asks you to do.
Rather than choosing the one that promises the most certainty, start with the experience you want. Do you want to discuss one question, learn a symbolic system, or explore how a tradition describes your birth information?
Pew found that 30% of U.S. adults consulted astrology, tarot or a fortune teller at least yearly in its October 2024 survey. That result measures participation, not predictive success. Choosing a format is a different question from establishing whether its claims are true.
Compare what each reading starts with
| Format | Usual starting material | Useful question before trying it |
|---|---|---|
| Tarot | Selected cards and a question or theme | How do you approach prediction versus reflection? |
| Western natal astrology | Birth date, time and place | What remains uncertain without a birth time? |
| Korean Saju | Birth details converted into calendar pillars | Can you show and explain the actual pillars? |
| Numerology | Numbers derived from a date or name | Which method are you using? |
| Palm reading | Features of the hand | What will the session include? |
These are broad descriptions. Ask about the particular service rather than assuming all readers use the same process.
Readings built around a question
In a tarot reading, cards provide images and symbols for interpretation. You might arrive with a question about a situation you are considering. A birth time is not normally the starting requirement.
Tarot also has a history outside divination. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes early tarot as a card game. Its later fortune-telling role should not be mistaken for evidence that the images can establish future events.
Readings built around birth information
Western natal astrology interprets a chart calculated for a birth. Saju interprets calendar-based pillars. Numerology uses numbers associated with details such as a birth date or name, depending on the method. The shared use of a birthday does not make their calculations interchangeable.
Before paying, ask what details are needed and what happens when something is unknown. If you are curious about the Korean system, the Saju beginner guide shows what its chart contains.
Readings based on other signs
Palm reading interprets features of the hand. Face reading interprets facial features within its own traditional framework. These can appear alongside other services: Visit Seoul’s cultural guide describes a cafe offering several kinds of divination.
A venue offering several services is not evidence that they share one method. Ask which kind of reading you are booking and how it will be explained. Do not assume that a general “fortune reading” includes the particular chart or format you had in mind.
A simple way to choose
If your main interest is an illustrated conversation about one question, investigate how a tarot session works. If you want to return to the same birth-based framework over time, look at a natal chart or Saju. If you mostly want to experience a cultural tradition, ask about its context as well as its predictions.
Decide your budget and questions beforehand. You can be curious without treating the result as instructions. Our explanation of the limits of Saju makes that boundary explicit for the Korean system. A useful first experience leaves room for questions and disagreement, including the possibility that the method is not for you.
