Can ChatGPT tell your fortune?

ChatGPT can write a fortune-style reading, but that is not evidence that it knows your personal future. Treat an imaginative reading as a story or reflection exercise unless its specific claims have an independent basis you can check.

The distinction matters even when the wording feels unusually personal. A response can use details you supplied to create a coherent narrative. The narrative itself does not verify that a meeting, promotion or relationship will happen.

Choose the kind of conversation you want

You might want entertainment, a symbolic interpretation of a chart, or help thinking through a decision. State which one before asking the question. Each has a different standard of usefulness.

For entertainment, ask for an explicitly fictional reading. For a traditional chart explanation, provide a verified chart and ask which labels support each interpretation. For a practical question, provide the facts you know and ask for options, uncertainties and information you still need.

Do not turn a model benchmark into a fortune score

OpenAI’s September 2025 SimpleQA comparison reported a 26% error rate for gpt-5-thinking-mini. OpenAI’s explanation describes errors on factual questions in a historical evaluation. It does not measure fortune-telling ability, current ChatGPT performance or whether a particular reading is true.

A system that sometimes answers factual questions correctly has not thereby demonstrated access to an individual’s destiny. Ask for the basis of the specific statement in front of you.

Replace a promise with a useful exercise

Consider the fictional prediction, “A new opportunity will transform your career soon.” It leaves the event, deadline and meaning of “transform” undefined. Almost any later development could be fitted to it.

A more useful request would be:

Help me think about the next three months at work. Separate facts I provide, assumptions you make, and possible scenarios. Suggest one small action for each scenario and explain what information would change your view. Do not present the scenarios as predictions from a chart.

You might leave with questions for a manager, an application plan or a list of skills to practice. Those are actions you can assess, even if the original fortune-style statement remains untestable.

Notice when the answer exceeds its evidence

Be cautious about precise dates, certainty about another person’s private thoughts, or claims that a bad outcome is unavoidable. Ask what observable information supports the claim. If the only answer is another confident paragraph, you have not obtained additional evidence.
