Saju is not the Chinese zodiac, and the difference is the whole point

The most common misunderstanding about Saju in English is that it is the Chinese zodiac with extra steps. It is not, and the gap between the two is larger than it looks.

What the zodiac gives you

Your zodiac animal is the earthly branch of your birth year. One character. It is genuinely part of your chart — the lower half of the first of four pillars.

That is one eighth of the information, and it is the least personal eighth, because everyone born within your twelve-month window shares it.

What Saju gives you

Eight characters, from four timestamps, of which one — the upper character of your day pillar — is specifically you.

The year pillar you share with roughly a twelfth of the world. The day and hour pillars you share with almost nobody, which is where the resolution comes from. The combinatorial space is 518,400 distinct charts.

The bigger difference: it moves

Even that undersells it. Your zodiac animal is fixed for life. Your Saju chart is fixed, but the decade layered over it is not.

Every ten years a new pair of characters is laid across your eight, and the same chart reads differently underneath it. A chart short of Water for thirty years that enters two Water decades has not changed — its conditions have.

This is the part with no equivalent in the zodiac, or in Western astrology. And it is why Saju gets consulted in Korea for practical timing questions — when to launch, when to marry, when to move — rather than for personality description.

Why the confusion persists

Partly because the animals are memorable and the stems are not. Partly because zodiac content is easy to write and Saju content requires understanding a calendar.

But mostly because "you are a Tiger" is a complete sentence, and "you are Yin Metal born in the Tiger month with a weak day master entering a Fire decade" is not one you can put on a placemat.
